Mathematics - An Undecipherable Language?
–AMP
Mathematics – Ahh yes, one of the most hated subject. But is it really as hard or undecipherable as it seems? The truth is, it isn’t. There’s the answer, now I know some of you, if not most of you will disagree and that’s alright. This post isn’t about sunshine and glitter of the subject itself but more about why it is hated (According to me).
Mathematics is a wondrous subject, it is a language unlike any. Everywhere you look, everything you see has some form of math in it and that itself deserves a round of applaud. As I say all this, you might think I’m a genius in mathematics but no I get average scores in mathematics, this is the case for most of us. Even if you know all the formulas or equations, or do a million question (without proper understanding) there’s no guarantee you’ll get the best score. Why? because just like every other language, Mathematics is the result of effectual practice – the ability to understand, apply formulas and solve equations in the right way is the ultimate aim when a question is presented. So why is it that we hate the subject? is it because we don’t understand the concept or because we can’t get the answer, I can hear most of you saying both but let’s rectify our question, is it because we’ve haven’t fully understood the concept or because we weren’t sure of which step to apply? Think about it and at first the answer may seem like a simple yes or no but there’s a much more hard to swallow answer. No student is weak at Mathematics no matter who or what tells you that. We all have different ways to grasp a concept and when we truly do understand a topic; believe it or not, it changes from being dreadful to fun.
There it is, you were never weak at Mathematics in the first place, it’s just that you haven’t figured your way. It is a long process and just like the shepherd who finally realizes the treasure was what and who he had become along the way (reference to The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho), Mathematics is a process of self discovery. Just like a puzzle, you have to keep trying and one day when you finally decipher the undecipherable, there will be a smile on your face and that will be worth it.
